#26 - Social Determinants of Longevity and Mortality

Original Webcast Date: August 24, 2005 3p.m. EST

Research shows that people who have more money and power live better and longer than those with less. While the knowledge that the rich tend to live longer than the poor is not new, the idea that power and privilege increases life span is. Your immediate boss is likely to live longer and have less disease than you. But you are likely to live longer than your colleagues with lower salaries and have less likelihood of suffering a heart attack than your receptionist or mail carrier. Hear Sir Michael Marmot explore the social gradient of health - how position and hierarchy are linked to health, longevity, and quality of life - and address what can be done about it.
